Toronto Area Dive Centers Provide Masks for Ventilators

Four Ontario dive centers are cooperating to provide full face masks to Toronto General Hospital. The masks will be used with newly developed respirators. NAUI Course Director Todd Shannon (NAUI 10986) reports that AquaSystems, Mississauga Diving, Brampton Scuba, and Oakville Divers have delivered 500 full face masks to the hospital where test versions of the ventilators have proved themselves and are expecting final approval.

Dr. Fedorko models the new respirator.

The ventilator plus mask units were developed by Dr. Ludwik Fedorko, staff physician at the Toronto General Hospital’s Department of Anesthesiology and a member of the Hyperbaric Medicine Unit at the University Health Network.

The units will be used for filling any shortfall of respirator availability for treatment of patients in the COVID-19 pandemic.
