At NAUI, we are proud to highlight motivated individuals who embody the spirit of our mission: Dive Safety Through Education. This month, our Dive Spotlight shines brightly on Victoria Gonzalez, Communication Specialist at NAUI HQ, who is making waves in the diving world and the 2024 recipient of the DEMA Wave Makers Award.
From Active Duty to Dive Professional
Victoria’s love for the ocean began at the age of nine, snorkeling in the waters of St. Thomas. Despite being the only one in her family drawn to the underwater world, her passion never wavered. She attended Sea World Adventure Camp in the summer after 5th grade and was immediately inspired by her experience to one day become a rehabilitator for some of the ocean’s most amazing creatures.
Life, however, presented challenges—dropping out of college after struggling with chemistry, seemingly leaving that dream of working in any diving capacity behind and pivoting to serve six years in the military.
While transitioning from the military, Victoria discovered the DoD Skillbridge program and decided she would try and pursue her passion once more time. Through NAUI’s program, Victoria worked at Jacksonville’s Diver Supply while she began her training. In the first four months, she went from an uncertified non-diver to earning her Master Diver certification – a testament to her perseverance and dedication.
Upon completing the program, Victoria was finishing her last semester in college pursuing a bachelor’s degree in public relations from Franklin University. Using her passion for diving and professional skillset, she accepted a position with NAUI HQ. She has spent the year working behind the scenes to create impactful campaigns and share inspiring stories that connect people to diving and ocean conservation.

“Winning the Wave Makers Award represents to a dream I thought was forgotten,” Victoria shares. “It’s a direct example to how diving can change lives, and I’m grateful to be part of a community that believes in education, accessibility, and conservation.”
A Vision for the Future of Diving
Victoria’s vision for the industry aligns closely with NAUI’s mission to empower divers with education, conservation, and inclusivity. She is particularly passionate about making diving more accessible for underprivileged youth, veterans, and anyone who dreams of exploring the underwater world.
“Diving gave me purpose, joy, and a sense of peace I never knew I needed. I want to share that feeling with as many people as possible while raising awareness about protecting our oceans,” says Victoria.
