Christopher Chin, COARE Executive Director

Ocean Diplomacy: The Fight to Protect our Oceans and Reduce Plastic Pollution

From the moment he locked eyes with a shark, COARE’s founder, Christopher Chin has advocated for shark protection and ocean conservation. COARE has a proven track record as the international leader in ocean diplomacy at the United Nations. There, they lead NGOs in driving systemic change for the health of our people and planet. In recent years, COARE’s primary focus has been on the development of a global plastics treaty to protect human, animal, and environmental health.

International policy and local efforts are interdependent. In addition to global ocean conservation policy and diplomacy, COARE remains deeply connected to the dive community. Christopher will share knowledge of plastic pollution and how it may be reduced by COARE’s Green Divers for Blue Oceans initiative. This program encourages divers and the dive industry to recognize and embrace sustainable practices, including the reduction of single-use plastics at every level across the dive industry.

The entire dive industry depends on the health of our ocean, and COARE is tirelessly devoted to its conservation. COARE’s efforts help to protect not only the beauty and diversity divers seek, but also the health and longevity of people and the planet. Visit coare.org to join this important work.

Alex Fogg, Natural Resources Chief, Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Florida

The SS UNITED STATES Artificial Reef Project: A roadmap for creating the World’s Largest Artificial Reef offshore Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Florida

Divers travel around the world to visit specific artificial reef sites, specifically large vessels.  In Florida alone, there are many world-class dive sites, including the USS SPIEGAL GROVE, USNS VANDENBERG, and the 888ft long USS ORISKANY. Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Florida, has not historically been known for world-class diving.

But, in 2022, a plan was devised to become the dive capital of the State of Florida.  Since then, more than 300 artificial reefs, including 14 large vessels, have been deployed to not only provide essential habitat for local marine life but also provide a premier destination for diving.  Shortly after the plan was developed in 2022, the SS UNITED STATES, a nearly 1,000 ft historic cruise liner, was identified as a possible artificial reef candidate.

The SS UNITED STATES was purchased by Okaloosa County on October 15, 2024, and preparations are now being made to continue the legacy of this vessel by making it the largest artificial reef in the world.  Learn about the superior artificial reef program in Destin-Fort Walton Beach and the who, what, where, when, and why associated with the “Big U” project.
